What is a dedicated IP?
To understand a dedicated IP we must first define a shared IP. Consider this metaphor to describe shared vs dedicated IPs. A shared IP is like an apartment building address (i.e. utilized by multiple people) while a dedicated IP is like a house address (i.e controlled by one source). As a resident of the apartment building you can not control the behavior of all the occupants. If poor behavior is displayed, the other occupants may also be labeled with a bad reputation. On the other hand, the house occupant has full control of his address. Therefore, reputation can be controlled as it is based on actions of a single entity.
How does it help me?
Using dedicated infrastructure to send an email campaign separates the customer's reputation from the crowd. Start off with a neutral reputation and build on that reputation by using proper collection practices and expected sending behavior. No other entity can effect the dedicated server's reputation, which makes the sender in complete control of the IP and domain reputation. This in turn will result in high delivery rates and better engagement by contacts.
Is this extra work?
