Heritage Grant Opportunities

The National Endowment of the Humanities and the National Endowment of the Arts are currently offering several grants for institutions and non-profit organizations that have cultural heritage-related programs. These are national-level programs and highly competitive, but could prove beneficial to some of our local organizations that might otherwise miss out on such opportunities.

Following is a brief description of each grant program with links to application materials and additional information. Remember, you'll never receive a grant if you don't apply.

Queen Mary at Risk?

The National Trust's Preservation Online has an article reporting on the Queen Mary's recent financial whoas. The long and short is that the private operator of the city-owned ship is in default on their rent and therefore has sought bankruptcy protection. Meanwhile, the City of Long Beach has reaffirmed their committment to maintaining the Queen Mary, despite some outcries to the contrary.

"For the past 37 years, the 1,020-foot-long ship has been docked in the city of Long Beach, Calif., which owns the boat. The RMS Foundation, a nonprofit division of Queen's Seaport Development Inc., has leased the ship and its port for the last 12 years. The city says the group owes $3.4 million in rent payments. On Tuesday, Queen's Seaport Development filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection."

Google Online Library

A writer at Slashdot.org reports that Google is currently beta testing a new online library containing full copies of a wide variety of publications. Called "Google Print," the service could be a boon for online researchers.

"It seems that Google Print results are beginning to appear on searches. For those who don't know, Google has been scanning from libraries from some of the world's greatest universities in order to compile a freely accessible online library. An easy way to turn up these results is to simply type 'book', and then whatever you want to search for."

Window Repair Workshop

The Echo Park Historical Society is sponsoring a wood window restoration workshop on Saturday, April 9th, with a follow-up session on hardware and woodwork care on Saturday, April 16. Don't replace those original wood windows just because the wood is rotten, the ropes broken, and the sashes painted shut. Instead, return them to a clean, operable, and energy efficient condition. Participants will learn the low-tech skills and techniques necessary to successfully repair and maintain a home's original wood windows, hardware, and woodwork.

Both workshops are free to EPHS members, and $5 for non-members. Contact the Echo Park Historical Society at ephs@historicEchoPark.org, or call (323) 860-8874, if you would like to attend and for further details.
